Tenerife - Canary Islands

Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands and although flying time is 4 hours, it is only 200 miles from the Sahara Desert and is on the same latitude as the Bahamas. Divided by Mount Teide, the South is dry & arid, the North wetter and cooler but with superb natural scenery. The South offers a holiday destination with infrequent rain and temperatures that rarely fall below 20 or exceed 35 degrees.

The size of the Island makes it feasible to sightsee in the north in the morning and then sunbathe in the south in the afternoon. Although almost everyone speaks English in the southern coastal resorts, the north positively oozes Spanish colonial character.

The Oceanic location has brought about some extraordinary developments in the wildlife that has evolved in isolation. Botanicals in particular are in their element with the vast majority of the Islands floral list comprising over 2000 endemic plants, that is, flowers that are found nowhere else in the world. Tenerife is dominated by snow capped 12000 feet Mount Teide, a volcanic mountain with stunning scenery, plants, birds, forests and walking trails.
